Oil change interval?

I have a 2009 Mazda 3 that I only use to commute to work. I average driving about 650 miles/month, and half is in stop and go traffic. I've been following the 5,000 mile schedule for having the oil changed but it usually takes about 8 months between oil changes.
Is it ok to wait that long or should I be changing the oil more frequently?
