I just test drove a 2017 Mazda 3 with supposedly 57,000 miles from a small lot.
The engine looks pretty damn clean, and it drove pretty well, there are some minor cosmetic dings in a couple little buttons missing from the cabin plates internally.
He showed me the Carfax and I thought it was kind of odd that between 2017 and 2018. Supposedly the first owner put 42,000 miles on the car. Then the car proceeded to travel through 2 more owners. At one point the odometer is flagged for jumping back to something like 31,000 and then it slowly climbs through the 40s again until getting tagged at its current odometer reading a 57,000 itโs been through to car auctions where it was sold.
Should I trust this odometer? The car looks generally in pretty good condition. The engine is clean and the undercarriage is fairly free of rust. Iโve looked at two other Mazda threes that had quite a bit of rust buildup.
Should I assume this car was part of a rental fleet for getting that much mileage in the first year? Should I be concerned about odometer rollback? Or should I possibly consider the fact that the early reading of 42,000 may have been in correct?
The car is an out the door price of 13 K.. any advice is much appreciated
