Why do people love the “Sam Lake” version of Max so much?

Don’t get me wrong Sam is one of icons and I think it’s really cute, but for me I always just sorta saw it as a cheeky budget constraint. I though MP2 max was how was always SUPPOSED to look, even in the comics set before mp1 he looks like Timothy Gibbs. But now I see people saying “ he better have Sam’s face or I’m not playing” really?? You don’t think it’s a little goofy in a gritty, hard-boiled, film noir style action game?
