I am a high school dropout with a GED and some gaps in my knowledge. Math never came easy to me nor in school did I ever find it particularly interesting. After I left school and traditional education, my perspective changed. I had to self educate in order to get my GED and found math to be my most satisfying subject, when I solved a problem I truly enjoyed it and when I understood a concept to the point I could explain it to others I really enjoyed it. I didn't score the highest on my ged, but I did pass it the first try. Later took my college entrance exam and passed the first time scoring well enough that no remedial courses were recommended to me. I was placed in College Algebra for precalculus and around a third of the way through the course I had to drop for a variety of factors such as having to work and having taken to large of a course load for my first semester of college. I realized at the beginning of the class that was at a deficit compared to my peers, technically I had not finished algebra 1, began Alg two, or even seen precalc. Most of my fellow students had taken all of it in high school and I was literally learning everything brand new, and the time it was taking me to become marginally fluent in the course was twice the time I could allocate. up until the point that I dropped, it was my favorite course. I am considering careers in math-heavy fields so I figured a retake is a lot better than a bad grade in terms of a transcript later. I find maths interesting and enjoy the challenge of understanding the puzzles/patterns of it all, but I have some reservations. I am not in any sense naturally gifted in math and mathematical thinking does not come easy to me, but I am interested in learning more. I am curious if anyone out there may have some advice for a person in my situation. I am not afraid to put in the work, but I worry that I will be fighting an uphill battle indefinitely. I guess my dilemma is what leads me to ask the question above, thanks if you managed to read until the end and thanks for any advice.
