Is category theory an absolutely necessity to do research in algebra today?
Post Body
My professor for undergraduate abstract algebra introduced us to the subject using Aluffi's Algebra: Chapter 0. When I asked him why he used that rather than the more traditional texts (D&F, Herstein, etc.), he claimed that that's how the research today is being done. That is, he claimed that algebra today is looked at through the categorical perspective. I'm not very qualified to dabble in the research, so I can't say. Is he right? Any insight is appreciated.
