So I have never played the Sentinel class and I have some questions

So I have watched videos on the sentinel and its the jack of all trades class. But my question is weapons. ME2 and 3 they use pistols and sub machine guns. I've seen some videos where people use shotguns and others assault rifles.
I dont really want to play my sentinel the shotgun up close and tank playstyle. The AR one looks more interesting. I see some people use the Geth pulse rifle. However is it worth using an AR over a sub machine gun?
