How do save files work for Mass Effect Legendary edition (PC)?

So i may have a HD thats starting to give out, and i don't know if i need to back up anything onto my external HD. I just finished a Vanguard run on ME1, and when i come back from vacation im going to transfer it to ME2. However i don't want my PC HD to shit the bed and then find out my save is gone (it was a really good run, hence why i dont want to lose the save)
