How in the holy name of ball are you supposed to play the Vanguard in ME1?

I cannot play this class. I'm dieing so much its to the point of ridiculousness. There are combat encounters in this game that as an Infiltrator or a soldier i barely ever died in. The game was a cake walk. But as a vanguard? I can't kill anything with a Pistol or Shotgun. I die in encounters i have never died in before. I don't know what the hell im supposed to be doing.

Maybe this class isn't for me. Maybe its just ME1, and things get easier in ME2 and 3 with charge. Who knows. All i know is i have to keep putting the game down because this has become PAINFUL.
