Hawkeye Smelling Food....

I grew up watching MASH and now in my late 30's I have my wifw watching it as well. One thing I have ALWAYS noticed is that Hawkeye sniffs his food?
My question, is that I know some people actually do this IRL. I wander if that's a Hawkeye thing Alda added to the Character, or of that's an ACTUAL Alda thing to do is sniff the food....It's weird but it's pretty noticeable, and also mentioned in one Episode.....(the one where he walks out on a patient bc he is hungover)
