We all love Thor, and we all know that we want this next movie to be the greatest Thor movie that will ever be. Mind you, I also liked the first two films as well and they are essential stories for the MCU. So when they have announced that Taika Waititi will be taking over as the new director for Ragnarok, it's understandable how this decision by Marvel really got everyone confused and worried.
Originally we assumed that the third movie will be dark and serious in tone all throughout due to its apocalyptic narrative.
And after watching Taika's three movies (Boy, What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For The Wilderpeople), I have noticed this pattern that Taika has with his directing style particularly with the narrative tone of these movies.
Usually the first act starts out by introducing the characters and establishes their place in the world that they live in and usually Taika does this mostly in humorous ways. Taika fleshes out his characters in a way that despite their flawed characteristics and eccentricities which are often ridiculously funny, they are very relatable and makes it very easy for the audience to empathize with the characters. And that's where Taika's unique signature as a comedy-drama director comes in and really shines out, which is consistently in line with the overall tone of the MCU.
This is probably the specific reason why people got curious and wondered how Marvel is going to make an apocalyptic movie with a comedic director. And this is where I think the irony comes in, which is my favorite thing about the way Taika Waititi directs his movies.
If you watched Taika's movies, the second and third act of his movies would eventually reveal a conflict in the story that would either be so tragic that you almost forgot that the movies you were watching were indeed comedy, most especially when it comes to the climax of the film. That ending scenes can become so serious, it's like a roller coaster ride of emotions unexpectedly for the audience.
Which is also what really excites me as well for Thor: Ragnarok because I do believe that Taika can actually pull off a hilarious Thor movie but with a very heart-breaking climax. Can you imagine the tone of Ragnarok where in the audience laughs at the first 45 minutes until suddenly the story just takes an unprecedented turn from the comedy Thor-Hulk-Doctor Strange cosmic road trip to the dramatic destruction of Asgard and probably the death of most Asgardian citizens?
I wouldn't want to spoil the story for those who have not yet watched these films but for anyone who has recommended you to go and watch Taika Waititi's movies, you should do so because it really helps you to understand how the tone for Ragnarok would possibly pan out as well. So anytime someone says how they're so worried that Thor's last movie is gonna be full on comedy, convince them to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople (and Boy as well) and tell them otherwise.
Tl;dr watch Taika Waititi's movies to understand how his comedy style works and how dramatic the climax can possibly be for Ragnarok
