I can't believe it's not going to let me edit the title. Thank you voice to text.
I joined a gym that offered krav maga, BJJ, MMA, and kick boxing. I signed up for both krav maga and BJJ to the tune of $175 a month. Not bad in my opinion. I had done krav maga at another gym for about 9 months before that, but that has nothing to do with this story as far as I can tell. When I 1st started I was probably up there about 4 times a week doing either one or the other, krav or BJJ. Back-and-forth, trying to keep them about equal. Definitely had more fun with BJ, something was just off about the Krav Maga side of the mat. After a couple of months, I crashed. Stopped going for about a month or so if I remember correctly, it's just something that happens - for me anyway. A month after that, I got a new job. another $6 an hour. Unfortunately, night shift. My only option would have been to go to noon classes. So basically, go to work, go home, go to sleep, get up, go to class, go BACK home, go BACK to sleep.... Get up, go to work, et cetera. Yes, I know some people have that level of dedication. Yes, I know that could be me. Frankly, I just didn't want to. It's a hobby, not a commitment- NOT TO ME, anyway. Don't get me wrong, I'm fully committed when I'm there. I give it my all and I try to be a good student and a good training partner-raining partner I've never had any complaints in that regard. But at the end of the day, it's a hobby. I have a job, I pay my bills, I'm an upstanding member of society, I don't think I owe anyone anything beyond that. When I asked to cancel my membership, they wanted 80% of the remaining yearly contract-$1260. I unfortunately had to pay them come up with what really got me and what still gets me is this sense of entitlement and superiority they kinda had. I'm a 32 year old man, I am always respectful and attentive, but somehow I feel like I'm put in this place where frankly I aint shit to them, or so it seems.
I guess what I'm asking about is culture: Is there something about martial arts culture that I need to be aware of? Are instructors more or less inclined to think that their students have an additional obligation to them or something?I don't really know what I'm asking, try to fill me in if you can.
