Some context, I’ve been practicing Kumdo, which is the Korean variation of Kendo and I’ve been wanting to do a contact martial art for a while now. I also teach in urban area with a lot of Brazilian students and they have gotten me interested in learning more about their culture and connection to it. Until recently I never gave much thought to Brazilian jujitsu, but I’ve been thinking about it more and more and I had some serious questions about it. 1. Do people actually like it? 2. Can I learn it for both sport and defense? 3. Do I get a chance to learn the philosophy of it as well one reason I like Kendo/kumdo it’s because the philosophy is thrown in there a lot as well. 4. How can I tell the difference between a good school and a not so good school meaning one that is going to focus on character development and helping me learn as opposed to just being sports and karate camp for adults.
