Free nights + cash out of pocket?

I have 2 free night awards, but I’m looking to book 3 nights. I don’t want to buy the points, as the cost of the points vastly outweighs the cash price.
Can I make 2 separate reservations, and then call to combine them? First with the FNA, the 2nd cash out of pocket?
First time redeeming free night awards and want a smooth experience.
Will be in Hawaii, for reference.
