From what you've observed, do most marriages tend to be codependent relationships?
Post Body

The dictionary definition of a codependency is as follows:

"a psychological condition or a relationship in which a person manifesting low self-esteem and a strong desire for approval has an unhealthy attachment to another often controlling or manipulative person (such as a person with an addiction to alcohol or drugs)

broadly : dependence on the needs of or on control by another"

Forgetting the obvious signs of abuse and neglect that would take place in a simply terrible relationship, don't most marriages in practice meet the broad definition of codependency?

Even if you have a truly great spouse, you're not free to go off and do things without telling them. You certainly can't have sex with other people, make big financial decisions, or do anything else that a single person could do. While it's perhaps understood that you've signed up for this commitment, are most marriages in practice institutionalized codependency?

Discuss.

EDIT: I need to clarify that I'm not against committed relationships to one person. While I don't necessarily hold monogamy on a pedestal, I try not to knock it either. What I'm getting at is the observation that I've had (when being around married couples and talking to them) that the sense of autonomy as a free person goes away in more ways than one once the legal obligation of marriage has been met (hence this being on r/marriagefree). Sometimes this is quite sweet (such as always thinking of them and browsing for small gifts), but it often has bad consequences where they can't go anywhere without their partner, must consult them on purchases/travel, etc. and they seem to become a shell of their former self.
