The charterer wants to load 50,000 tons of phosphate with a Stowage Factor of 45. You have an assumed Broken Stowage of 4%. Your vessel has a cubic capacity of 2,250,000 cubic feet. Can you lift this cargo?
So I know the Stowage factor is how many cubic feet it takes to stow 1 ton.
50000 x 45 = gives amount of space required to stow all of the tons, which is 2.25 million
Here's where I get confused -- to determine broken stowage, I am doing 50,000 x (1-.04) = 48,000 tons of phosphate. This means that I can hold 48,000 tons of phosphate.
So the answer to this question is that I cannot lift this cargo, correct? I get confused because I am not sure if I apply the broken stowage formula to the total cubic capacity or the cargo that I am lifting.
