Been kicking around the idea of writing one for a while now. Would be creative commons or whatever the right term is so no intellectual property issues, appropriate for a musical about a communal activity written by a chaotic good libertarian socialist French horn player (me).
Thinking of setting it in a community college band for greater range of possible story lines and range of realistic actor ages but not married to that idea. No pit orchestra All music is played by band members on stage both diagetic and whatever the other term is.
Lots of creative hijinks possibilities like the infinite marching band gag where actors loop around back of stage to keep marching, intermission has an on stage football game in a role reversal, acts/scenes are named after parts of a march (first strain, second strain, trio, etc.), theme of coming together, comradery, etc. Probably some tragedy for some drama but don't want it to be cliche and forced feels. Probably pg 13 rating with realistic language and suggestive stuff and lots of humor and heart and dumb instrument innuendos and this one time at bandcamp jokes.
Thought about setting it during band camp but I think over course of year slice of life might be better, main set would be band room with conveniently placed upright piano characters sometimes play, field show on astroturf or real grass if remotely feasible, parade route through the audience, opening overture played with musicians in surround sound throughout theater, and probably other stuff I've forgotten. Possibly set east of bay area for realistic large range of ethnicity and income range, maybe not quite present day not sure.
Fight song is we are the mighty monarchs. Only song beyond that I've started is called one flute fifty dollars about a yardsale flute changing a woman's life.
And prominent queer and POC plotlines and characters because fuck cops be gay do crime. The four horn players are a barbershop quartet as a running joke and the tenor ends up being transmasc thus explaining why he's in a male singing group.
I suck at orchestration but AI is probably about 3 years from fixing that problem. Nice thing about creative commons is I can invite any collaborators and obviously get feedback here and elsewhere on stuff from plot lines to melody lines to drum lines.
I hope I'm not screwing myself over writing all this publicly but life is too short not to write a wholesome musical about marching band called Band Together.
