Want to start map making, confused by where to start.

Hi all, So I'm a retired soldier and eternal DM/GM. I'm my past career I was a intelligence soldier who created maps, but they were military maps - not astetically pleasing - and using military programs. If I wanted to make more fantasy style maps, where should i start?
I only have tried Inkarnate but its...a bit lite.
