I DM for D&D and want to make a map, any advice?

So I DM and I'm doing a campaign I've been thinking about for a while. I need a map, to have it in physical form to help me write it out. Now the only thing is I have a garbage laptop, I do have a scanner. Issue that is the biggest is I have no graphic design software and barely any room to download. Can it be done or should I just give up?
