Trying to educate myself about Manx Syndrome
Post Body

Hey everyone! So last night, I found out that Manx's exist. It happened as a result of endless research over the course of a week or so. You see, I work at a humane society, and I've recently been getting assigned to one particular area. In that area, which is mostly one room full of cats, there is a beautiful, loving, sweetheart of a 3 month old kitten. For anonymity, I'll call him Koda. We have lots of kittens, but he is unlike any cat I've ever met. All he ever wants is a human connection, which is why I initially thought he was a purebred Siamese due to his appearance and behavior.

However, from the moment I met Koda, I was aware of the fact that he was different. He has no tail. Since he was brought in as a stray, and considering there's no scarring, I would think that it's natural. His other symptoms that make me believe it could be Manx Syndrome: His anus is often raw and protrudes a bit, and the surrounding area scabs up often. His stools are runny at least half the time or more, he usually doesn't make it to the litter box (if he tries to). His feces also stick out of his anus at times, and smear on himself and surfaces he rubs against. His back legs are often damp, unsure if it is due to urine or some kind of leakage, as it is colorless. He also tends to hop rather than walk around his cage.

Koda was brought in mid-late September I believe, and he's had these symptoms the entire time. The medical person I spoke to at my work couldn't remember what he had when I asked her about it, but only knew that it was permanent. I'm planning to find out for sure when I go back to work, but honestly, no other disease/condition I've read about has even come close to describing what Koda experiences. I know I'm being impatient here, but I'm afraid that if I wait too long, he'll become adoptable to the public and I'll lose him.

So, if you're still with me, I'd love to hear all about how you all care for your Manx with Manx Syndrome, or any advice really. Diet, hygiene, general care, etc. I want to make sure that if Koda does have it, that I could provide him with all of the care that he would need. I work 10 hour shifts over the course of four days a week (not consecutively), but I have family at home during those hours. If they were to leave the house while I was at work, it would not be for long periods of time (no more than an hour). We do have three other cats in the house, but two come in and out as they please. Two of them did respond positively when we introduced the third cat as a kitten, and the third cat is quite friendly, so I don't anticipate any issues with them.
