When does John start becoming sympathetic for you?

I know some of you will say “never, he’s a nazi”. Which is fair enough but then you aren’t the target audience for this question.

If you started to like and root for John, about when in the series was it? I remember what a terrifying character he was in the beginning, and by the end I was rooting for him.
