When is it better to read the manga vs. watch the anime and vice versa?

This is something I've been thinking about. Like I'm not sure I feel like watching the anime of manga I've read, or if I see the anime first, if I feel like reading the manga. The exception being when the show is maybe only two series and the manga keeps on going. What does r/manga thing? I imagine this could just as well be posted to r/anime too.
