I'm learning Irish trad tunes on mandolin after having played them on my cello for about 5 years.

I think generally the bowing patterns fiddlers use are more or less up to them and certainly you'll find some common bowings for certain tunes but I'm finding most resources advocate for picked instruments to have specific pickings..

For example reels UD UD UD UD, and jigs DUD DUD

Reel patterns are easy because I come from a bass background where alternate picking/plucking is the standard but I'm finding the jig pattern to be awkward when I'm string crossing. For example DUD (string cross to a lower string) DUD, D(string cross up)UD or really anywhere the strings cross in the pattern where the direction of the string is opposite my next picking direction.

Is this a case where the standard is a general guide and as long as I'm accenting the right beats, my picking pattern can "pick as I go" (be whatever is comfortable and convenient) or should I really slow things down and try to stick with the standard picking pattern?
