Denying employee shift change

Post Body

Hi I’m in middle management and have been for sometime now but I believe there is never a wrong time to seek advice.

I have one of my employees who oversees night shift workers requesting to move to days since there is upcoming day shift positions. Usually this would be fine but I am leaning towards denying him and promoting someone else to the day shift position. Here’s why

  • This employee has multiple write ups for attendance and leadership issues. The issues are he refuses to hold people accountable and would rather be peoples friend then their boss.

  • I have multiple day shift employees ready to be promoted and are eager to do so but will turn down night shift positions due to scheduling conflicts

  • This employee is having trouble managing small teams on nights and day shift is double the workforce I’m not sure I could trust him to pick it up.

How do I break the news? Am I b eing unreasonable?

I know this will be a morale hit for him but I’ve already had so many issues.
