Hey everyone. I’ve been placed in a really shitty situation and I’d like to get some perspective on how to handle things
I currently have two direct reports. One of them just started reporting to me 3 weeks ago. I supervised a bunch of their work before this, however the manager-direct report dynamic is new. With the work they completed under my purview, everything was satisfactory. Hardly any mistakes (if any), reports were on time, questions were asked if unsure about something, etc. Wouldn’t go above and beyond but I got solid work. They have other responsibilities but because they didn’t report to me (and thus didn’t need to provide them with direct feedback on that work) I didn’t pay much attention to that side of their work.
A few days ago I had a meeting with my manager who told me there were issues with my new direct report’s work with the other tasks they are responsible for, and I should meet with another manager who directly oversaw my direct’s work to get the full scope of the issues. When I met with this manager, I got a list of 7-8 issues this person needs to work on. I was also told that they brought it up with their director (who my new direct reported to at the time) and nothing ever came of it. Now I’m being tasked to give them this feedback.
I have a meeting with this person this week. Clearly I need to give them the feedback, and I’m only telling them the 3 most important issues so they don’t get overwhelmed. I want to give them enough time to make some sort of progress before I have to write their review. I just feel screwed by my management team. How do I handle this conversation with this person? Do I bring up how shitty this situation is to my manager?
