Advice on clean application

Decided to try treating my fingers like the wall when I paint and taped odd the edges...was a bit of hassle, but pretty successful think it could be handled better.
What tips or tricks have you tried and trashed, or tried and kept, to not get polish on your fingers while trying to keep it just on the nails?
