Looking to go from semi-long cut to short pulled back look.

So this was a few years ago but this is pretty much my hair now http://imgur.com/B0U7q and im looking to go for a Joseph Gordon Levitt ala inception look http://imgur.com/DSLFI. I have very thick hair and im not really sure what to tell the stylist as to what to do (how much length and where and so on) any help would be appreciated.
