Looking for a thick/heavyweight suit

I'm looking for a decent all purpose heavyweight suit for autumn/winter, but I have never bought one before so have no idea what I'm looking for.
Having browsed a few stores I think I'm maybe looking for Tweed or Heavyweight wool - but any pointers on what to look for? The only one I have seen in the wild that looked like what I'm after had an almost felted appearance.
Ideally I'm looking for something that I can buy as a 3 piece suit, get off of the peg and then get altered. Dark charcoal grey in colour.
I have a budget of up to $1000/£750. I'm in the UK, but happy to buy from the US if I need to.
