Advice for a Suit

As the title states, my flatmate and I were thinking about getting a suit together as there are several buy one, get one deals; So we split the cost of one suit and both get one.
I don't wear a Suit very often at all but think it would be nice to have one. Are bargain suits like even worth getting?
Also, general advice for a first time suit-purchaser would be great! :)
