advice on weatherproofing Jack Purcells

I recently acquired a pair of white Jack Purcells (link) and have realized that if I step in mud even once, it'll be next to impossible to get the dirt out. I'm considering weatherproofing them to help prevent stains/dirt; does anyone have tips on how to go about this, and which products to use? Is it an effective way to mitigate stains?
