The ultimate goal in magick is the marriage of the self with the divine, and the first step on the path is the experience of divinity - this is commonly referred to K&C of the HGA. All of the banishing and invocations and hexagrams and pentagrams and barbarous words and divine and angelic names - all of these are ultimately training wheels. They are exercises for the mind of the microcosm to recognize the macro, for the macro is speaking to you - since you were born and until you die, and always in between.
But this voice is a very subtle one. Often, a magus will find a longing for big, bombastic neon signs to glow for them to point them on their way - but this is a fairly rare occurrence. Most of the time, the voice of an angel is so tender and sweet, that one could mistake it for wishful thinking. But ultimately, the divine speaks most often in subtle force - to quote Dion Fortune quoting someone else "God is pressure." The process of ceremony is the attainment of speaking to the self without prejudice of reaction or self consciousness - as self consciousness is self deception, for the self is deception. The vow to the higher self is one of silence, and to only allow the subtle voice to speak through you, and this is the act of marriage. This is the union of the micro and macro, and is the first step on the path to true exemption.
The Guardian is not a loud, raucous being that comes to you in a suit of fire. It is a small internal dialogue, with which you recognize as divinity itself.
