Players are drafting way more than ever, just not on Paper
Post Body

Feels like this always gets ignored on discussions for how badly WoTC fumbled Paper Premier Sets.

I would consider myself a casual drafter on Arena (I'm happy if I get to touch Gold, if I get to Platinum it must've meant I really liked Drafting the set) and a very very very very lapsed drafter on Paper (Pretty much only considering drafting sets not draftable on Arena). Drafting on Arena just introduces so much more convenience vs Paper Drafting.

  • It's cheaper considering I just usually pay $20~50 every 3~9 months, if each draft I did well at paid like 75 to 100% of my next draft's cost it takes a long time for those gems to run out on me. There's also Arena's daily gold and quests that eventually adds up to 10,000
  • Don't have to deal with information being presented incorrectly (Either unintentionally or through someone angle shooting)
  • Don't have to deal with physical cards/sleeves/playmats/going to an LGS
  • Takes less time out of my day (Which frees up time for either more drafts or doing non MtG related stuff)
  • Relate to the above, there's less downtime of waiting for matches to finish. Vice versa, there's less pressure of matches going to time so you can play to your outs all you want (IE; I've had a handful of matches going down to me decking an opponent, these would have just ended as draws on Paper unless I want to cause a scene and argue semantics on board-advantage and what outs I have which is probably not worth it).
  • With Paper Standard being cannibalized by Arena Standard, there's just no pull to open Standard Packs in Paper.
  • Not entirely related but watching someone draft on MTGO/Paper vs Arena is like night and day

Considering the above why would I even consider drafting on paper if I want to play Magic on paper? If I wanted to hang out with people for an extended period of time in my LGS, I'd play EDH.

WoTC in the last couple of years has introduced and emphasized ways for people to approach the game in ways that would be more preferential and convenient to them and the ones left with no-one to play with are saying this is a failure on WoTC's part.
