Why did the Hobo put in code that Don's father was a dishonest man?

In the Hobo's code little Dick runs out to see what the hobo has carved on their post and it is the sign for dishonest man. I thought it was because Don's dad hadn't paid him, but their was no time in between nonpayment and Don seeing it for the hobo to carve that.
I also feel that this is some kind of backwards foreshadowing for Don's dishonesty, but was their a literal reason?
