Don's Hershey meltdown (spoilers)

Yes, he had a total inappropriate meltdown. But I've always felt that they went overboard by suspending him with pay, with no guarantee of return. It seemed extreme to me. And by essentially telling him to find a job somewhere else they are not only losing one of the best ad men on Madison Ave, but also gaining a huge competitor.
I think it would have been very different if they had done it with a set time for return, maybe 3 or 4 months.
