How do you all feel about recycling substrate? (Coco/perlite)
Post Body

For my first few years of growing commercially, I tossed all my root balls into a pile outside and left them. Eventually as margins dropped and cost increased I decided to try pulling from my pile to save money.

Now I have been doing it for couple years. It seems to be working fine. This biggest issue I have faced, is now I have to pull weeds in veg. They tend to sprout a couple weeks after transplanting. They are super easy to pull and you can get rid of all them during veg.

Basically I have enough substrate that I can leave it outside for about year before it is needed. That seems to be enough time for the roots to breakdown and for it to get flushed by the rain.

People still use manure as mushroom substrate? Thought even at scale that was basically supplanted by other stuff.

Isn't that usually Coir-Vermiculite with Perlite only ontop?
