USBC for Mac pro 4,1

So I saw a different tread that was stating that 2009 and up Mac pro can't handle thunderbolt 3 but I keep seeing these USB c sonnet cards for them. I know that USB c vs thunderbolt 3 speeds are different. I will only be using it for new harddrives mostly. Should I really worry about having tb3 on my Mac pro? I feel like I'll be ok with just usb-c. Thoughts?
