M1 Mac mini storage upgrades

Post Body

So I plan to butcher my base storage mini to upgrade the chips. I've been thinking about this for a while now but I've figured I should get my facts straight about what nand to follow up with. There are two major options:

  • (a1) regular storage chips taken from iPad pro's, mostly Hynix/Samsung/WD stuff Apple has been using for years. Base mini sports the same A1 WD chips
  • newer Kioxia (ex Toshiba) nand from the likes of 12 pro max / newer iPads, probably faster stuff that they put into the devices out this year

Additional question: since the iPhone 12 is just a straight up nand replacement, do I just solder away the upgraded storage or do I need to back up the previous nand data to be able to flash it to the replacement chips with the jcidtech / wl8888 programmer?
