32M working primarily in MD/NoVA. I've been in low voltage work for 4 years now. I started with an alarm company making $22/hr, and I've stayed with them. I now make $32/hr because I've been killing myself to learn all that I can and putting in a lot of hours. I'm the youngest guy there and I'm considered indispensable. And don't get me wrong, that's all great, I'm grateful to be where I am and making what I am. But I feel like I'm kind of hitting a ceiling, and I'm tired of having to do everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Burg, Fire, Access, CCTV, Networking, even a little bit of standard mechanical lock work for a major client of ours. Some of those things I do more than others, but in addition to handling all of those fields I also have to know multiple vendors for each. We don't say no to anyone no matter what system they have. Whatever you've got we will at least try to work on it.
It is exhausting. Valuable, sure, but I would rather specialize if I could. Or maybe get some certifications and leverage those plus experience to make some kind of lateral move to another part of the industry. I just don't know.
Anyone have any insights?
