First things first, hello you there my dear reader! Hope you're having a good day.
I'm a tabletop RPG aficionado and a long-time fan of The Lords of the Rings. I grew up by reading the book and watching the movies (and I do it more or less once every few years up to this day), but I never dabbled too deep in the overall lore and I was never able to finish reading the Silmarillion... I know, I'm sorry.
I've been gifted The One Ring 2E this Christmas and I kept daydreaming and checking wiki articles for the last few days, trying to put together a premise for a campaign to run with my players, but I'd rather ask someone who is more competent on the lore than I am if what I'm planning is reasonable within Tolkien's lore, before digging myself too deeply in something that wouldn't make much sense or feel genuine.
The game is set to be played in the years between The Hobbit and The Lords of the Rings and I was planning to set my game right after Bilbo's birthday, so after TA 3001. The campaign is meant to defeat/prevent the return of an ancient creature (Thuringwethil), who would be able to change the tide of the War of the Ring as we know it if not stopped.
- After being dismantled/skinned in the First Age, Thuringwethil lost much of her powers but survived. She hid deep underneath the fortress of Maedhros (today Tol Himling) and survived the fall of Beleriand after the War of Wrath, in inaccessible places at the roots of the earth. She slept for the better part of the second and third age until a storm over the Belegaer made a ship hit Himling shores and woke her up.
- A small fleet captained by an Umbar Lord, who escaped from Umbar in TA 2980, sailed to the North and, hit by a strong storm just offshore to the Grey Havens, sought shelter on Tol Himling's coast and reawoke Thuringwethil. Nowadays (in TA 3005), the Fortress of Maedhros, reigned by Thuringwethil and manned by Umbar men, has been rebuilt and stands strong as a port over the northern Belegaer.
- For a whole century, while Lindon's populace shrank in the Third Age, some tribes of Orc settled in the northern part of that region (westward to the Blue Mountains, named Forlindon). The number of orcs arose under the influence of Thuringwethil and after she did put the Regent of the Halls under a spell, orcs were allowed to pass through the dwarven tunnels and raid the Lhun valley, eastward to the Blue Mountains.
- The Hall of Dwarves in the Blue Mountains shrank as well in the second half of the Third Age, as the populace who flew there after the sack of Erebor, went back home. The wandering dwarves of Durin's Folk left there the appointed Regent of the Halls, a dwarf left in charge of the half-empty tunnels.
- In TA 3001, Gandalf and Aragorn start hunting for Gollum together. Since they both will miss from Eriador to go West, Gandalf called for a company to keep an eye out for the Orc's influence over Eriador, unaware of the reappearance of the vampire in the West.
That's the premise. Lindon is threatened by orcs and sea pirates, possibly involving full-fledged open battles in the Gulf of Lhun, with the aim of affirming their presence there and forming a safe seaport for the coming War of the Ring, maybe even taking the Grey Havens and their fleet by force eventually.
I've yet to plot down the fine details, such as involving Annuminas and the Tower Hills in some way, but that's what I've currently in mind. So, what do you say? Do you have any further suggestions?
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks and happy holidays!
