Hi, I'm trying to figure out what film this newspaper article refers to. The article was published on August 10, 1916 in The Carbondale Leader. Here's the article: https://i.imgur.com/bSGZqRO.png and here's a link to Newspapers.com: https://www.newspapers.com/image/638859861/

Here's some things we know about the film from the article:

  • The crew was in Lake Como, Pennsylvania on August 9, 2016
  • It involved Vitagraph studios
  • The film crew "'arrived [in Lake Como] via the Erie, detraining at Hancock, N.Y., and taking a railroad called the O. & W. from that place to Lakewood'"
  • Some scenes were filmed at Anna Gill's Sunnybrook farm
  • Ralph Ince directed the film
  • Anita Stewart is in the film
  • Nettie Carney is in some scenes of the film
  • High Lake was in the background of some of the scenes

I went through all films that Anita Stewart was in and that were directed by Ralph Ince from around that time. Wikipedia states all three are currently lost.

  • My Lady's Slipper was released in January 1916, so that's too early
  • The Combat was released in September 1916, and I think this is the most likely film that was referred to in the article
  • The Painted World was released in June 1919, which I think is too late from the date of filming

So it seems pretty certain that it is The Combat. In a description of the film, there is a line "Seeing that everything is against him in court, Burton escapes and seeks refuge in the wilderness of the mountains, where he becomes a hunted outlaw", which might be the films with High Lake as the background, but that doesn't mean much.

What makes me think it might not be The Combat is that the details page on the American Film Institute (AFI) state the production period of the film was April — May 1916, and the article was published in August.

Some options:

  • The production period on the AFI website is wrong
  • The production period is correct, but they filmed a couple more scenes in August
  • It's not The Combat

Anyone have any thoughts?
