Retaining name on EUC

Hi,
So I was an EUW player who has been merged into EUC. Didn't realise a merge was coming but now have to change my mains name as it exists already on a character I created at launch on EUC at launch and not played since day 1. Does anyone know if I delete that character I will still be forced to change the name?
i.e are names only claimed as long as a character exists or are they claimed indefinitely?
Hoping someone may have experience who has server hopped already.
