Who is 'Mysterious Figure'?

I was just watching S2E2 (The Man Behind the Curtain) and saw a figure that appeared to have pushed Ben at around 31:55. Here's a screenshot of him from Lostpedia. I initially thought I (somehow) was the first to notice him because I've never heard of him before, and I've seen all of Lost and read a lot of the wiki (on second thought, there's probably a lot I haven't heard of :P). But apparently he's a well-known thing. Lostpedia doesn't really know what he was or why he was there, only that he was presumed to be Jacob; that's what I would have thought too. Does anyone have any theories?
