bizarro experience at Target - any idea wtf is going on?!
Post Body

so during a quick office supply run to the friendly neighborhood target the other day, this happened: i walked into the store, straight to the office stuff, grabbed a few things, then kept walking in a loop around the store. i read the ingredients on a $2 chocolate bunny, then put it back. i walked to the beverage section, looked at the shelves for maybe a minute. noticed there was a guy standing behind me, moved so he could get to the shelves. walked over to an "on sale" section, looked for maybe 30 seconds. noticed the same guy was now slowly walking towards where i was (odd but whatever).

headed to the self checkout, started to scan the stuff... suddenly mr. wonderful is now hovering over me, like 1 ft away. i pay for the stuff, validate ticket, and head out the door... well guess who it is? "did you have any trouble paying for everything today?" i stop, and say "no why do you ask?" i forget the exact back and forth, but basically he said that my BAG was "suspicious". i asked what was suspicious about it, and he said he didn't know, but that there are people watching cameras all around the store and "they" assigned him to follow me around, because "whatever was going on with" my bag was "suspicious". he then said that the [goon squad] was "on there way", and asked if i was sure i didn't have anything unpaid for in my bag. (btw, i did not have anything in my bag). i said i was sure i had nothing.

he never asked to look into the bag, and just kept saying that "they" were on there way. well "they" had a decent amount of time to show up as we were "chatting", but i finally said "well i'm going to go now"... he basically said "ok"... i walked over to my car, and he went back into the store. i drove out of the parking lot.

uh.... well wtf was that?! should i expect some awkward altercation if i go back to this target? or any target? is it even like, "legal" to be stopped like this? should i have waited for the squad to show up so that they could have searched or whatever and found nothing? should i contact customer service?

i am a bit creeped out by this whole thing, and wanted to see if anyone here has any potential insight.

My gut reaction as soon as you said he was hovering over you at self-checkout was that this dude does not work for Target in AP, or for Target in any capacity. The rest of your interaction with him gave me the heebie-jeebies, and nothing about it sounds professional or even remotely on the up-and-up. Speaking as a <100lb girl, meaning I am very aware of my surroundings when out in public, and hyper aware of anyone giving off any creepy vibes, this guy sounds like Linus from Peanuts, but instead of a stink cloud, he's surrounded by a stalker cloud. I would go back to that Target asap and first thing walking in, ask to talk to a either a manager or someone in AP to explain exactly what you just told us happened to you, and then I'd ask if that's at all close to the procedure their team follows. It's probably not, so that would make me feel like someone unstable was/is pretending to be Target AP in order to stalk/creep out/nope I'm done with synonyms here, at their store.
