In the best way possible! I’ve lost about 30 pounds in about 3 months! It’s taken a lot of discipline and tracking my food and exercise and limiting alcohol but my god it feels really really good to finally be shedding this ridiculous weight I put on.
3 years ago I moved to Canada, I didn’t have a work visa yet so I was being supported by my partner for the 1st year. To pass by the time I drank. A lot. And I ate a lot when drunk. I quickly ballooned from 190 to 220.
It continued on even with full time work keeping me busy, I ate and drank til no end until I topped 245 pounds towards the beginning of summer. None of my clothes fit and being in denial I just carried on, bought tank tops and had a few shirts that did manage to fit me so I nearly wore the same outfit week in and week out.
I had no idea why I was just getting bigger. I had zero accountability to what I put in my body and just loved over indulging. It just made me feel... better. Over the past year and a half I tried daily exercise, it helped a bit but stalled quickly when i didn’t see much change after 3 months. Probably lost 5 or so pounds. I didn’t drink either from last year May 2018 to April 2019. That did help out tremendously however I never changed my eating habits so I just maintained most of my weight.
As I mentioned earlier; I topped out at 245 around June. I was constantly hungover, eating all the poutine and burgers and fattening food. I tried tracking my food in the past but it just never stuck... until I finally reached the end of my food and drinking abuse. In July I laid down the hammer and was like “this is fucking pathetic, take back control, learn to give a damn and do what’s best for you first.”
And then I began tracking everything I put in my mouth. Every single thing. I still do now after 3ish months. I don’t let myself go hungry, I eat around 1500-2000 calories a day mixed in with hour long walks everyday. Sometimes much more. I still eat whatever I want but usually it’s mostly lean meats and vegetables. I love eating a lot in a sitting so eating a huge plate of vegetables really does it for me and a side of chicken or fish. If I can fit it in my week, I’ll indulge in light beer, usually no more than a six pack. I generally don’t because I’d rather eat calories than drink haha!
This morning I weighed in at 212 and was upset that my pants make me look bigger because they don’t fit! They are so baggy now! Anyway; I have a long way to go to feel the best I can in my own skin. The first 3 months have been so incredibly insightful and learned a lot about being an adult at 28.
A huge takeaway I’ve learned besides accountability... it’s okay to turn down friends that want to go out and drink or eat. Especially if they are the kind that do it nearly everyday. Stick to 1 or 2 (or sometimes none at all!) times a week to go out and live and experience. A big benefit for me: I don’t enjoy going to the bar soooo I don’t!
Good luck to everyone on their journeys!
