My MIL scolded me like a dog when I mentioned cookies
Post Body

Backstory: I (27F) have always been heavier (200lb ) but have gained about 100 pounds in the 9 years I've been with my partner. He was always trim and athletic, until he began putting on some weight in the past year. Prior to this, his family has talked to him about my "health", so I know they're attributing his recent weight gain to my own weight issues. The entire family is very athletic and health conscious , and most are runners.

I have been silently losing weight this year and have lost about 45 pounds. It's not quite enough to notice on my body type, but I've also gained a lot of muscle. I've finally started sharing this small victory and showed my partners mom my progress pictures when we arrived yesterday to visit for the holiday. It should be noted that my mother in law is very sweet, supportive, and encouraging. She refuses to say a negative thing about anyone, ever.

Today, we were all sitting down doing our respective hobbies and a bunch of conversations were happening at once. Someone mentioned cookies and I said, "mmm, cookies sound good". She was next to me and said, "Melissa, no!" in the same tone you would tell a dog to drop something.

I made a face and my partner could tell I was instantly taken aback, but I don't think he heard her comment due to the other conversations. I KNOW she didn't mean anything by it, but it was just SO discouraging, and feels like a window into what she really thinks about my weight.
