Hi folks, another fellow showing off his 308 gave me the courage to ask for some pointers. I've been following this sub for a while and have long thought about trying my hand at long range. The reality is I have two kids, and the closest range over 100 yards is about an hour from me (and still only 800 yards, small potatoes in your world). So while I'd love to dump myself into debt on a Wolverine it just doesn't make much sense. I snooped around the gun shop yesterday (like "looking" at puppies at a pet store. you never just "look") and got my eye on a Savage Axis chambered in either 308 or 30-06. I started shooting years ago on a 1903, so the 30-06 caught my eye. But I understand that once the ammo shortage goes away I'll probably find 308 much more easily.
So what are my questions... I suppose to start, does anyone have experience with this rifle? I understand it is a budget rifle and I can't expect the same performance you guys are getting, but where would I use it anyway.
Once I get my skills up, what limits can I expect to push the rifle or the cartridge to?
Anyone feel strongly for 30-06 vs 308?
Vortex optics. How do we feel about them?
Anything else I should consider?
Cheers
