I recently tested two types of 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition in my rifle, a Tikka CTR with 24" barrel: Hornady Match 140 grain, and Federal Gold Medal Match Berger 140 grain. Each group was shot with a 10 minute rest period.
After shooting two 10-round groups with each at 100 and 300 yards, and using the mean radius method, the Hornady had much smaller groups than the Berger (0.33 MOA at 100 and 0.44 MOA at 300 for Hornady vs 0.46 MOA at 100 and 0.75 MOA at 300 for Berger).
I also chronographed both types of ammunition, with two 10-round groups each, and 10 minutes rest between groups. The Hornady had a slower muzzle velocity than the Berger (2664 FPS vs 2693 FPS), a larger standard deviation (20 for Hornady vs 11 for Berger), and a larger extreme spread (60 for Hornady vs 36 for Berger).
I understand that group size is not the end all, be all of precision ammo selection. In order to get the best precision I can, would I be better served choosing the Berger ammunition, or the Hornady ammunition? Or are they close enough that I can go with the cheaper option? Hornady Match is about 30-50 CPR cheaper than the FGMM Berger rounds.
