Officiating (Football/Baseball) Question

Any redditors involved as football or baseball referees/umpires? How hard is it to get into it? I know that I would have to take classes and that's $350 or so to get started - but I would want to know what my odds were of making my money back and then some before I laid it out.
Alternatively, are there any leagues where I could be an official without getting certified or are there any cheaper certification options?
