Long layers or U/V cut

I got a U cut and found it to be pretty problematic as I wear hair my in two braids for work out in the field (why I do 2 braids: hair gets knotted easily and I’ve found 1 braid just falls out, I have very thick hair). Would long layers make doing 2 braids easier? I don’t want my hair straight across which is why I got the U cut to even with
