I'm looking to adopt a kitten or two. Where to start?

So I'm looking to getting a kitten or two. Some people I know suggested I adopt so I want to give that chance. Just wanted to see if anyone knew of a shelter in the Long Beach area. Also if anyone can give me a heads up on the process of adopting a pet (ie paper work, fees, shots etc) Thanks!
