cycling tips for a beginner/best place to get a bike?

cycling is not my forte (more of a running girlie) but would really like to push myself and do an Ironman 70.3 next year
Was wondering if anyone had any tips for good places to get a bike for the roads/cycle shoes/good cycling clubs based in SW London.
